The skippybal is ‘back in town’
Since 16 April, a very well known Dutch celebrity has been hopping around the Dutch television channels on an orange Skippy Ball. It’s time once again for Orange Ball at It’s, and thanks to the television spot that goes along with it, the Skippy Ball is making a serious comeback. The warm balls are flying off the shelves and the largest dutch electronics retail chain is being flooded with requests for sponsorships.
The idea for the promotion and the television spot was the brainchild of Frontaal, the agency that It’s uses for most of its promotions. The idea came quickly enough... making it happen was somewhat less easy, however. Where, for example, does one quickly find 20,000 sturdy, imprinted orange Skippy Balls? A quick check with the popular toy chains usually resulted in derisive laughter. Skippy Balls? What are they again?
One month before the television spot was to be shot, it looked like the whole idea would be stillborn. Good idea, but unfeasible. Ultimately, Quadrand in Eindhoven, who specialises in promotional items, was able to have the balls made to size in China. One small obstacle: due to the Chinese New Year, production would be delayed by about two weeks. Quadrand arranged for nine printed demo versions of the ball to be made and flown in the day before shooting.
The television spot has been on the television for more than two weeks now, and It’s has almost run out of balls. The company is also being called by primary schools, summer camps and scouting groups with requests for free Skippy Balls as ‘sponsoring’.
